The Center for Book Arts provides classes on weekdays, weeknights, and weekends. Our Fall 2003 class schedule is available online. Also included are classes in papermaking and printing, at the Center itself, and with affiliated organizations and artists' studios.

Studio rental is available to any person who is qualified to use the equipment, including a 36" guillotine peper cutter, a 3-ton Kensol hot stamping press, five Vandercook proof presses, a treadle platen press and several hand platen presses from 5" x 8" and up, including a newspaper size Washington Hand Press, many cases of hand type, and all the usual equipment you expect to find in a letterpress printshop and hand bindery. Rental fees are $17 per hour ($12 for members). Monthly rates available as we well.

Please call us at (212) 481 - 0295 to register for a class, find out more about a class description or instructor, or to request a printed copy of our class catalog.

Residency
As part of its continuing commitment to education and innovation in the book arts, The Center is pleased to offer Artist-in-Residence programs that support the production of new work. These grants will provide, at no cost to the artists, individual studio space, a materials budget, a cash stipend, an exhibition, and 24-hour access to and use of The Center's equipment and facilities. Click here for details.

Internships
The internship program offers hands-on training in arts administration and management and book arts techniques. Participants receive a comprehensive overview of not-for-profit operations and are able to take classes and use the workspace for their own projects. Internships, although on-going, usually coincide with one of the three semesters of the Center's classes. The lengths of internships vary from one month to several months, depending on the student's needs as well as the Center's scheduled activities. Internships are throughout the year.

Work/Study: Jeff Hall building bindery wallsWork/Study
A limited number of work/study positions are available for students or artists who want to work to pay for workspace rental or the tuition for CBA courses. In this program, students can study tuition-free by working a pre-set number of hours at CBA. At least 50% of these hours must be completed before the start of the class and a materials fee must be paid prior to the first class. The Center offers both temporary and semi-permanent positions. Temporary work study can be completed with seasonal or special projects such as the annual Holiday Sale or other scheduled events or CBA projects. Semi-permanent work study students work on projects that include office administration, gallery reception, archive management and general building maintenance.

Volunteers
Much of the Center's accomplishments depend on the time donated by volunteers. Printing announcements, maintaining the printshop and bindery equipment, stuffing envelopes for a mailing, and a myriad of other activities constitute the "behind the scenes" work that needs to be done. If you are able to spend a few hours of your time helping make the Center a better place, please click here to schedule volunteer time or call Rory Golden at (212) 481-0295.

Volunteering: Paul Moxon adjusting the 8 x 12 Peerless treadle press.

In the future, we will be building a "How-To" area with online instruction and discussion of techniques. We welcome your participation in developing this area.
