2005 Residency Programs
All application materials must be postmarked by October 1, 2004
The Center for Book Arts was founded in 1974 in New York City to develop and promote the traditional crafts of bookmaking, and to encourage contemporary interpretations of the book as an art object. As part of its continuing commitment to education and innovation in the book arts, The Center is pleased to offer Artist-in-Residence programs that support the production of new work.
2005 Workspace Grants for New York Emerging Artists
In 2005 The Center will continue its Workspace Grant for New York Emerging Artists. The recipients of this award will be offered space, time and support to explore the production and exhibition of artist's books and related work. Up to four artists will have the opportunity to work at the
Center for a six to eight week period. The Center is committed to
supporting emerging artists, particularly those from cultural and artistic
traditions under-represented in the book arts field.
The Workspace Grant includes individual studio space, a $500 cash stipend,
full use of the Center's unique printing and binding facilities, up to $1000
materials budget, and an opening reception and presentation of the artist's
work in one gallery case as a Monthly Featured Artist. This includes an announcement of the
exhibit and a web page about the artist's work on the Center's website. As
part of the award, the artists may enroll tuition-free in the Center's
week-long workshop Bookbinding for Artists, or an equivalent course in
letterpress printing. Experienced printers and bookbinders will be
available to advise the artists on issues of materials and techniques as
they experiment with different book structures and processes. The Workspace
Grant for NY Emerging Artists is made possible with public funds from the
New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
